Mindfulness Journaling spiritjournaldailyevents

(Daily events and pattern recognition)

Why Use It

This type of journal is used to enhance awareness of the daily events and activities in a person’s life.  It is different from a regular journal that simply records events. It is a written record of personal reactions to daily events.

The purpose is to understand the driving forces in your life, both good/enjoyable and bad/stressful. It is through this awareness that individuals can begin to manage their lives. The importance of a spiritual discovery journal is that it gathers strength in helping us with our daily life, especially if we write about it often. A journal of discovery grows more powerful as it is used. Instead of reacting to life, this journal enables a person to anticipate and manage life’s events.

How to Use It

Do the following for one week.

Step

Name

Action

1

Subconscious Mind

Find out what your subconscious mind has to tell you about your daily events. Write fast and include everything that comes to mind, no matter how trivial.

Note: The key to making this work is keeping your pen on the paper and keep writing no matter what comes out, even if it appears like gibberish or nonsense.  DO NOT worry about spelling.  The objective is to tap into your subconscious mind only. If you stop writing, your conscious mind will quickly take over and you will lose communication with what your subconscious mind has to say. Do this for about 3-5 minutes.

2

Conscious Mind

This is the traditional journal. Consciously think and briefly describe events that take place in your life that day. Describe anything that comes to mind: events, people, images, relationship, etc.

3

Daily Reflection

Write down how you felt about the events, people, and relationships. Ask yourself questions like:

·      What were my positive thoughts and actions?

·      What were my negative thoughts and actions?

·      What decisions did I make?

·      What did I not do that I should have?

·      What did I do that I shouldn’t have done?

Weekly Pattern Recognition Analysis

After a week go back and summarize both subconscious and conscious mind notes to see if there are any patterns. These patterns are what you need to look at to determine if the driving forces in your life can be changed for the better. Better patterns can result in greater control over events and less simple reaction to life experiences.

Actions

Write down actions to take. Ask yourself questions like:

1. Is there a message in this journal?
2. What can I learn here?
3. What’s the most loving thing I could do now?
4. What’s the most important thing to focus on now?
5. What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
6. What would I do if there were nothing to fear?
